MOULANA MOULVI AL-HAAJ MUFTI KAZI
DR. SALAHUDDIN MOHAMMED AYUB
AL-AZHARI QADIRI KASNAZANI

(1942 – 2025)
GOVERNMENT CHIEF KAZI OF TAMIL NADU

Chief Kazi Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was an eminent Islamic scholar who dedicated his entire life to serving the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu. His academic credentials included M.A, M.Phil, and PhD in Arabic Language and Literature. He also held the prestigious Al Ijazathul Aalia degree from Al-Azhar University in Egypt, a testament to his deep expertise in Islamic jurisprudence.

He was a true scholar in every sense of the word, with a comprehensive grasp of Islamic teachings. He was appointed as the Government Chief Kazi of Tamil Nadu over four decades ago, following in the illustrious footsteps of his father, Kazi Muhammad Azeezuddin (Rahmatullahi Alaih). From then on, he served the Muslim community of Tamil Nadu with unwavering dedication and sincerity. His services were always rendered free of charge, and he was deeply involved in various religious ceremonies aimed at fostering harmony and unity within the community.

Prior to his appointment as Chief Kazi, he served as an Arabic Professor at The New College, Chennai. Even in his later years, well into his 80s, he continued to serve the Ummah tirelessly with the assistance of the Deputy Chief Kazi of Tamil Nadu. Chief Kazi Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was held in high regard by all who knew him. His wisdom, humility, and guidance were sought by countless individuals over the years.

He hailed from a distinguished lineage—belonging to the family of Dewan Mohammed Ghouse Sharf-Ul-Mulk (Rahmatullahi Alaih), who served in the court of the Nawabs of Carnatic. His great-grandfather, Kazi Ubaidullah Naqshbandi (Rahmatullahi Alaih), was the first Government Chief Kazi of the Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu), appointed in 1880 by the British Indian Government.

With deep sorrow, we note that Moulana Moulvi Al-Haj Mufti Kazi Dr. Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub Al Azhari (Rahmatullahi Alaih) has returned to his Creator on May 24, 2025. His passing marks the end of an era of spiritual leadership and scholarly brilliance. Yet, his legacy, teachings, and service to the community will continue to inspire generations to come.

The Muslim community of Tamil Nadu has lost a stalwart and a compassionate leader, but his memory and contributions will forever remain in our hearts and prayers. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un.
