MOULANA MOULVI AL-HAAJ MUFTI
KAZI MOHAMMED AKBAR
ALI SHAH AAMIRI
CHIEF KAZI (IN-CHARGE) OF TAMIL NADU
Moulvi Mufti Kazi Mohammed Akbar is currently serving as the Chief Kazi (In-Charge) of Tamil Nadu, carrying forward the rich legacy of Islamic scholarship, service, and leadership that his family has upheld for generations. He has served with distinction as the Deputy Chief Kazi of Tamil Nadu since 2000 and was long recognized by the late Chief Kazi, Dr. Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub (Rahmatullahi Alaih), as his most trusted aide and successor.
He is the eldest son-in-law of the esteemed Chief Kazi and belongs to the same revered scholarly lineage. His distinguished ancestry includes Moulvi Muhammad Ghouse, also known as Iy’anat Khan Bahadur (Rahmatullahi Alaih), son of Moulvi Muhammad Sibghatullah Madrasi known as Qazi Badrud Dawlah (Rahmatullahi Alaih) — who served as Qazi ul Mulk during the Nawabs of Carnatic’s reign in the Madras State. Another illustrious ancestor, Qazi Ubaidullah (Rahmatullahi Alaih), was appointed as the first Government Chief Kazi of the Madras Presidency in 1880 by the British Indian Government.
This lineage has been engaged in Islamic scholarship and religious service since the early 9th century Hijri, a tradition honored and continued by Mohammed Akbar with steadfast dedication.
According to the prominent Deccan scholar, Maulvi Muhammad Murtaza (Rahmatullahi Alaih), one of the founders of the movement for the establishment of Osmania University in Hyderabad:
“The prestige of this family in South India is no less than that of the family of Shah Waliullah Muhaddis in Delhi. This family has the honor of being continuously involved in scholarly services for at least 15 generations, a rare example of such dedication.”
Professor Muhammad Yusuf Kokan (late), former Head of the Department of Arabic, Persian, and Urdu at Madras University, also highlighted the significance of this lineage in his work, Khanwada-e-Qazi Badr-ud-Dawla:
“This renowned scholarly family of South India is the Qazi Badr-ud-Dawla’s family. In history, there is scarcely any other illustrious family that has maintained its scholarly stature for seventeen generations while continuing to render golden services to religion and knowledge.”
A man of both secular and religious learning, Mohammed Akbar holds a B.Sc. in Physics and the Afzal ul Ulama degree. His commitment to both Islamic and contemporary education has shaped his holistic approach to leadership. Over the past two decades, he has worked closely under the late Chief Kazi’s guidance, gaining deep knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence and administration.
His duties include solemnizing marriages, resolving family disputes, issuing Fatwas, offering Shariah-based guidance, and officiating at major religious functions and ceremonies. As the Chief Kazi grew older, many responsibilities — including the daily functioning of the Kazi’s office — were gradually entrusted to Mohammed Akbar, reflecting the trust and confidence placed in him.
He is also a respected Islamic speaker, known for his heartfelt discourses that emphasize Ishq-e-Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and adherence to Islamic values in contemporary society. He regularly delivers the Jummah Khutbah and leads Friday prayers at Masjid-e-Walajahi, and is invited to mosques across Chennai and Tamil Nadu for key religious gatherings.
In his current role as Chief Kazi (In-Charge), he upholds the values and vision laid down by his predecessors. Through his leadership, the institution continues to remain a vital and trusted pillar of guidance for the Muslim community of Tamil Nadu.
